In 2008, ComEd achieved several key environmental accomplishments, such as reducing the amount of SF6 (sulfur hexafluoride, an insulating gas used in circuit breakers) released through an aggressive SF6 management plan. ComEd also increased the amount of office paper recycled by 5 percent to 1.9 million pounds. Overall, ComEd reduced greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 30,000 tons of CO2, better than the 2008 goal. This is equivalent to taking approximately 5,000 cars per year off the road.
The ISO 14001 EMS standard establishes 18 elements required for an EMS to be certified. Receiving this certification confirmed that ComEd's EMS has each of these elements. A few examples of these elements include environmental policy and management commitment, emergency preparedness and response, and monitoring and measurement.
