It's been a long time coming, but at last it looks like Europe's faltering efforts to build a satellite navigation system to rival America's GPS is ready for take-off.

Contracts to build the project's first operational spacecraft have just been awarded. The EU says Galileo, as the constellation of satellites is known, will provide a more sophisticated and accurate service than GPS.

EU transport commissioner Antonio Tajani said Galileo would begin operations in 2014.

This, of course, is the technology which plays a big role in car navigation, communication networks and the military.

Galileo's been talked about for some 15 years, so Mike Johnson asked Europe business reporter Nigel Cassidy why it had taken so long to launch.
